Discovering the site
Unique in its kind in Touraine, the Chartreuse du Liget is an ancient Carthusian monastery founded at the end of the 12th century. Both its layout and architecture are outstanding. The property is secluded in the heart of the Massif des Chartreux, a magnificent forest the monks called «the desert ».
After walking through the imposing entrance gate, you will be following a visitor trail, from courtyard to courtyard, from edifice to edifice, which will allow you to appreciate the consistency of the architectural complex.
-
The portal
Dating from the first half of the 18th century, the portal was rebuilt between 1740 and 1750 when the Carthusian monks carried out major renovation works. Walk through the successive doors and reach the various types of buildings, dating from various periods which served different purposes.
-
The church
Now discover the remains of the 12th century church, built in the pure Plantagenet style, and its great cloister, a typical element of Carthusian monasteries, erected in the 18th century.
-
The watchtower
Then wander about in the park until you reach the watchtower which offers a priviledged view on the outer wall and its watch turrets, built by order of the King at the end of the French Wars of Religion.
-
The Chapel
Finally, visit the little 19th century Chapel. This was the archive room of the Monastery before being converted by the Marsay family. There, you will find several tufa stone elements, among which an engraved plaque sealed in the wall, which was dedicated to Hippolyte de Béthune, a benefactor of the Chartreuse who bequeathed the monastery two paintings attributed to Caravaggio.
